Introducing ModernZ.ai

Co-Founders, ModernZ AI
80 million enterprise workloads are currently trapped in the legacy age. Today, we're launching ModernZ.ai to get them out.
One in three cloud migrations fail outright. 85% of cloud programs fall short of their business goals. 35% of enterprise cloud spend is wasted. These numbers are the lived reality of CIOs who moved with good intentions but are now left managing the consequences.
“One of the biggest future AI use cases will be migration — projects that take months or years and tens of thousands of people."
Patrick Moorhead, Moor Insights & Strategy
We've spent years inside this problem — at VMware, Amazon, and Microsoft, and multiple startups. What we kept seeing was the same pattern: enterprises with the right ambition, even the budget. But failing because of outdated technology and misaligned incentives. Vendors chosen before workloads were understood. Simplistic assessment tools built by cloud providers to accelerate consumption of their own platforms. Manual workflows that consistently missed the blind spots that matter most. Vendors incentivized for increasing billable hours, not outcomes.
The result: Costly, long and failed migrations. Enterprises operating hybrid environments by accident rather than by design, with complexity beyond what anyone intended.
What We Built
ModernZ AI provides human-supervised AI agents for CIOs to deliver infra and app modernization.
We don't just move workloads. Our agents deliver end-to-end outcomes via technical and licensing assessments, TCO & commercial plans, cost-efficient migrations and surgical architectural transformations. We evolve legacy environments into their modern avatars, architected for the next era of compute.
“At Kearney, we help shape and execute large-scale infrastructure and cloud modernizations. We typically see that in such programs there is insufficient due diligence on workload analysis. ModernZ AI is a platform we’ve seen that solves that problem, and has Narayan’s and Ashish's engineering pedigree from VMware, Amazon, and Microsoft baked into it. CIOs will benefit from ModernZ's platform and expertise to de-risk and accelerate their transformation journey.”
Himanshu Jain, Partner, Kearney
Our platform addresses three key needs:
① Workload Intelligence — Build the board-ready business case
Before any migration decision, CIOs need more than a vendor quote. They need an intelligent business plan they can take to the board. Our agents build that case from the ground up: a unified view of every workload across on-premises, private cloud, and public cloud, with AI-assisted dependency mapping, automated license compliance analysis, and "ghost peak" utilization detection that current tools miss entirely. The output isn't a spreadsheet. It's a quantified, auditable foundation for investment decisions, with TCO modeled across all target architectures before a single dollar is committed.
② Cost-Efficient Migration — Move fast without leaving money on the table
Knowing where workloads should go is only valuable if you can get them there faster, cheaper, and with less risk than any simplistic migration program. That's an engineering problem, not a spreadsheet problem. Our agents make migration decisions that require deep technical precision: detecting whether workloads run more efficiently on x86 or ARM-based architectures, identifying which applications are ready to containerize versus which require a different path, and understanding when a database migration demands a platform change versus a simple rehost. We sequence dependencies, automate remediation, and handle the commercial complexity — EDPs, Enterprise Agreements, VMware, Microsoft & Oracle licensing transitions — so that migration velocity and cost discipline move together rather than in opposition.
③ Infrastructure & App Transformation — Unlock AI readiness
Migration gets workloads to their destination. Transformation determines whether they can compete once they're there. The enterprises pulling ahead aren't just running their existing applications on modern infrastructure. They're surgically rearchitecting them to participate in the AI age: exposing data that was previously locked in legacy silos, enabling the real-time pipelines that AI services require, and eliminating the architectural debt that keeps applications frozen in place. Our agents identify which workloads are AI-ready today, which require targeted modernization, and which are candidates for retirement, turning infrastructure transformation from a vague ambition into a prioritized, executable program.
What This Looks Like in Practice
A major automotive services company recently applied our approach to its AWS migration. Legacy vendor tooling had flagged 10% of VMs for upsizing. Our assessment identified 95%, catching thousands of workloads that spike beyond statistical averages during batch cycles. Correcting this avoided $850,000 in annual emergency remediation costs. Automated license placement identified workloads that would have triggered $3 million in duplicate licensing fees under shared tenancy, eliminating that liability entirely. A four-layer commercial spend model then structured a $13.5 million commitment to match actual migration velocity, while unlocking $1.2 million in AWS MAP credits that offset 80% of parallel-run costs.
In total: $1.5 million in annual infrastructure savings, $3 million in licensing risk eliminated, and a migration-ready commercial strategy built on validated data rather than vendor estimates.
That's what we mean by modernization. Not a PowerPoint roadmap. Not a blueprint that lands in someone's inbox and stalls. We execute end-to-end, from assessment through migration to transformation, and we own the outcome.
The "Z" in Our Name
It represents the destination, a state where legacy complexity has been stripped away and every workload is running where it should, at the cost it should, with the governance it requires. The "Z" is not a migration endpoint. It's a modern avatar of what your infrastructure was always meant to be.
Our Team
We are Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and engineering leaders from VMware, Amazon, Microsoft, and multiple venture-backed startups, brought together by a shared conviction that the enterprise infrastructure & apps legacy problem is both deeply important and largely unsolved.
Narayan Bharadwaj, Co-Founder & CEO, is a seasoned business leader with a track record of scaling multi-billion dollar hybrid cloud portfolios. As GM of VMware Cloud, he helped the world's largest enterprises navigate complex cloud transformations through jointly-engineered partnerships with AWS, Azure, GCP, OCI, Alibaba, Dell, and Equinix. Previously, he was a head of product at ClearStoryData (backed by a16z, Kleiner Perkins, and Google Ventures; acquired by Alteryx), and held leadership roles at Salesforce.com and Oracle. Narayan holds three technology patents.
"Most enterprises today have a cloud bill, not a cloud strategy. The fundamental problem is that no one has given CIOs an objective, vendor-agnostic starting point — a true picture of their estate, a business case they can defend in the boardroom, and a migration plan that doesn't blow up on commercial execution. That's the gap ModernZ AI was built to close."
Ashish Aggarwal, Co-Founder & CPTO, is a veteran engineering leader with a career spent architecting high-scale distributed systems and AI-enabled B2B SaaS. He most recently co-founded Productiv (Series C; $80M raised from Accel, Norwest, IVP), serving as CTO for the SaaS and AI management platform. Previously, Ashish was VP of Engineering at Postmates (acquired by Uber) and a Director at Amazon, leading global teams and high-availability systems with billions in annual business impact. His infrastructure background includes 13 years at Microsoft building Office 365 Lync (Teams). Ashish holds seven technology patents.
"The technical debt sitting inside legacy infrastructure isn't just slowing enterprises down — it's actively blocking them from AI. The data is siloed. The pipelines don't exist. The applications were never designed for the services that now define competitive advantage. Transformation isn't optional anymore. The question is whether you do it with precision or pay for it twice."
The era of cloud experimentation is over. What enterprises need now isn't another migration. It's the analytical rigor to finally get infrastructure right.
